Walking requires movement
Are you a follower of Yeshu, or Jesus as translated? "Yes, sir, I am. I am a follower of Jesus. The Lord of Lords, the King of Kings. Yes, sir, I am a follower of Jesus." Oh? I saw Jesus just the other day. He was on a street corner, preaching to prisoners on a work detail. Where were you? "Oh, I had to work." I saw Jesus this past Saturday. He was in a soup kitchen, feeding the homeless and the poor. "Oh, well, I had that football game. I had to see that." Oh? I saw Jesus in the hospital, visiting sick kids and trying to put a smile on their faces. Where were you? "Well, I had that birthday party to go to." So, you are a follower of Jesus? "Yes, yes, sir. I am." Well, I see you—where is HE?
"And Jesus, looking at him, loved him, and said to him, 'You lack one thing: go, sell all that you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, follow me.’” Mark 10:21The amplified version says it this way, "follow Me [becoming My disciple, believing and trusting in Me and walking the same path of life that I walk].” As a matter of fact, what did Jesus say to all He came across to be His disciples? Peter and Andrew? James and John?
"And he said to them, 'Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.” Immediately, they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there, he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately, they left the boat and their father and followed him." Matthew 4:19-22Matthew?
"As Jesus passed on from there, he saw a man called Matthew sitting at the tax booth, and he said to him, 'Follow me.’ And he rose and followed him." Matthew 9:9This is what we will be discussing today. Let us pray. Heavenly Father, we give you all the thanksgiving we can give you. For life itself to life everlasting. We thank you for your grace and mercy towards us, and for the love you have shown us in allowing us to be adopted into your family. As we enter your word, we pray for eyes to see, ears to hear, and a spirit to receive and understand what you wish to teach us today, in Yeshua's name, Amen.
"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”Again, "Go." "Follow" "Walk" in the statutes and commandments, or do them, follow them. Action. Not just "yeah, I believe," and then nothing. We must DO something. James warns us of this.
"But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks intently at his natural face in a mirror. For he looks at himself and goes away and at once forgets what he was like. But the one who looks into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and perseveres, being no hearer who forgets but a doer who acts, he will be blessed in his doing." James 1:22-25If Peter had never left the fishing boat, he would never have walked on water with Jesus. His very shadow would have never healed people. If Matthew had stayed at the table of customs, we would have never read the book of Matthew and all that is in it. As for Saul? Well, he would have continued to murder and imprison God’s chosen and the disciples of Christ, instead of being Paul and writing a lot of the New Testament we read today.
I'm not trying to beat anyone up. I’m not. However, it was never Jesus’s intent to say to you, “Follow Me,” then have you stay where you are and live in your sin. As a matter of fact, He says this.
“Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?” Matthew 16:24-26This might be a difficult lesson for some to accept. He says to “deny himself.” In other words, it stops being about us. It is no longer about what we want. It is about what He wants. It’s about Him. We are to give up our earthly desires. Always remember, and never forget.
“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world.” 1 John 2:15-16If you wish, turn to Colossians 3
“If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.”Does it say that since you prayed a prayer once, you can now live and do whatever you choose? No. It says this.
“Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these, the wrath of God is coming.” Colossians 3:1-6There is this growing teaching that once you're saved, you're always saved. All you need to do is say a prayer once and just be yourself. Christ died for you to pay the price once and for all for your sins. So, now, there is no sin. Just be you. Be gay. Be transgender, be a dunkard, do whatever, live however; there is no reason to repent, for there is no sin.
This is nothing but a lie from the evil one himself.
“Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” 1 Peter 5:8We did a whole in-depth study on this before, but remember, if you live in and for the flesh, you will produce the works of the flesh. There is no other way. There is no real decision on your part. If you are in the flesh, living for yourself and the world, you will do the works of the flesh.
“Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” Galatians 5:19-21If you accept the lie, say a prayer once, and stay where you are in life, then are you saved? If you call yourself a “Christian” and willfully sin daily, are you saved? If Jesus walks by and says to you, “Follow me,” and you stay where you are and change nothing, are you saved? We are called to be children of God, followers of Christ. To follow means to walk. To walk means to leave something behind.
“But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.” Galatians 5:16-17Did you know the “sinner’s prayer” is not in the Bible? Did you know that Yeshua never said to any of His disciples, “Ask me into your heart and I will be with you.” This is a church teaching and a tradition passed on for generations. Now, try to understand what I am saying. I’m going to try my best to explain it.
Do I tell people to pray the “sinner’s prayer”? Yes. Why? Because that was how I was taught, and only recently learned that there is a kind of problem with some understanding that following this request to have Christ come into your heart, you are all good. What does Christ say?
“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” Matthew 7:21He said this also.
"If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” John 14:15Over and over again, Yeshua or Jesus said, “Follow me.” Which means, get up. Get moving. Leave the world behind. Repent or turn away from your sins.
Yes, this is one hundred percent true
“Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.”Mark 16:16And this also.
“Because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.” Romans 10:9-10Is there anything wrong with praying a prayer like this?
"Oh, heavenly Father, Lord God. I am a sinner. I know this. I know there is nothing I can do to change that. But I know you can. I accept Jesus's sacrifice for me. I believed He rose from the dead. I repent of my sins. Please send the Spirit of Adoption into my life. Help me to get to know the real you. Save me. Please. In the name of Jesus, Amen!"
No. There is nothing wrong with telling someone to ask God to show them He is real. However, what do you tell people to do after this? If Peter, John, Matthew, and the rest stayed where they were as He passed by, they would have still been fishers, tax collectors, and the like. Peter would have never walked on water with Jesus, and Matthew would have never given us an account of our Lord’s life on earth. We would have never heard or understood “God so loved the world.”
You can say the “sinner’s prayer.” You can ask God to show you He is real; there is nothing wrong with that. However, get up. Repent. {Turn away from and leave your sins behind} and FOLLOW Him.
“Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness of God. Therefore, put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” James 1:19-22Will I still do altar calls, tell people to pray the “sinner’s prayer,” and ask God to show them He is real? Yes. From this day forward, I will also try to explain that this is just the first step. Now take the next. Follow Him. Learn from Him. Be “doers of the word, and not hearers only.”
